I recently was in a room with 50 physician moms. We were asked to write what we worry the most about. The predominant answer was, “I’m afraid I’m too much.” It shows up looking like hyper-vigilance about everything we say or do:
Was my voice too high? too loud?
Was that too aggressive? too quiet?
Maybe I shouldn’t have apologized, or, I should have apologized sooner.
I showed too much emotion. Or. I should have cared more.
I came across cold. Or. I have got to stop acting like a fellow.
I wasn’t prepared enough. Or. I wasted too much time preparing.
I sounded unpolished. Or. I sounded to rehearsed.

know that you've never been too much. your boss might say you're too much. this is NOT a fact. their response also isn't your problem. that's their insecurities coming through. we don't have to like the boss or their reaction to us AND we can let them be wrong about us.
anyone who says you're too much is giving you a gift: they are saving you so much time! don't ever trust this person, they don't get you, & they're struggling on their own so much that they have to try to make everyone around them small & quiet. this sentence "you're too much" steers you toward the rooms you're SUPPOSED to be in....
...your people will always think you're just right. you'll fit right in. you'll be you and that'll be perfect.
be too much with me. EVERY boss i've ever worked for has said i'm too much. I am! I AM too much for bad bosses. I AM too much for old men who want all women to be stay at home wives. i AM too much for people with small minds and no sense of adventure, fun, or whimsy. I just don't make me wrong for their opinions. i'm too busy having fun with my soul sisters to notice. be too much with me. it's so much fun!

This is what it looks like when boss torpedoes our day:
Boss emails that she needs you “to be a team player and volunteer” to cover more call shifts.
You argue in your head– the schedule is already unfair with the senior men with stay-at-home wives already covering less call as-is. BTW, you’re right about all of this!
Your productivity grinds to a halt. The next thing you know, you’re exhausted, the day’s over, and it’s time to race to pickup kids before daycare closes. Feeling defeated, you agree to the extra call. You get home and fight with husband. There’s little sleep that night. The next day, you're exhausted before the day starts and the work is even harder on a tired mind.

The chronic habit of overworking keeps us staying late at work. It causes chronic suffering that usually sounds like this: I should be further ahead, my schedule is always the worst, I’ll never be valued by the boss.

Self-focused: I’m behind and I’ll never catch up.
Other-focused: I’m going to take one extra moment to thank the janitor and help brighten up her day.
Self-focused: My boss never supports me.
Other-focused: I’m going to be the example of the boss I want to be by giving my resident a few minutes of supporting encouragement by starting off with what she did well yesterday.
This approach takes LESS TIME (not more time). Being other focused CREATES more energy because your mind stops looping on the suffering. You’ll feel better. You’ll be energized. You’ll think faster and get home sooner without rehashing work all day and night.
